Dr Andrew Powell-Cullingford, GDC no. 62052, qualified from Guy’s Hospital in 1987 and was awarded a Master's Degree in Endodontics in 1991. He has gained experience in the USA at the Pacific Endodontic Research Foundation and with renowned endodontic specialists and continues to travel regularly to the USA to attend lectures and courses. Andrew is also a member of the American Association of Endodontists, and a member and past President of the British Endodontic Society.
Since 1988, Andrew has established an endodontic referral service for general practitioners. In addition, he has established his own private Endodontic Training Centre at Fairoak, the first of its kind in the UK. Andrew teaches hands-on courses to dental practitioners from around the UK and Europe, passing on his knowledge of advanced endodontic and microsurgical techniques to those who wish to improve on their skills in the field. He also lectures throughout Europe.
It is a very important field within the dental profession as it provides the foundation for advanced restorative treatment. This type of treatment requires specialist skills. In the United States of America, endodontists are widely available and it is common practice for general practitioners to refer their patients on to them, in order to maintain the best level of care. By adopting this established American method of referral practice, we provide a service for practitioners and patients alike, committed to excellence and results.
Many new techniques have developed recently to overcome old problems often encountered with endodontics. The use of a microscope with fibre optic illumination allows us the ability to visualise more clearly the smallest of root canals, to help clean and shape the root system more effectively. New designs of instruments made of nickel titanium are used for their flexibility in negotiating the irregular curves commonly found in adult teeth. These instruments and other equipment used in Andrew’s surgery facilitate a more successful root treatment for the patient.
